Hussain Ahmed Madani was an Indian Islamic scholar. He was also an activist in the freedom struggle of India's Independence. He was against the separatists who wanted the partition of India. Hussain Ahmed served as the principal of Darul Uloom Deoband. He was among the first recipients of the civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1954.

When he was born his father worked as a teacher in Bangarmau. At the age of thirteen, Hussain Ahmed went to the Darul Uloom Deoband, where he studied under Mehmud Hasan In 1892. After completing the esoteric sciences, he became a disciple of Rasheed Ahmad Gangohi.
He migrated to Medina with his family after graduating from the Darul Uloom Deoband. He began teaching Arabic grammar, Quranic exegesis etc. After 18 years of teaching various Islamic sciences in Medina, Hussain Ahmed was then appointed as head teacher and “Shaikhul Hadith” of Darul Uloom Deoband. He served in this position for approximately 28 years.
Hussain Ahmed's Efforts for Independence
The British Government sentenced his teacher Mehmud Hasan to a prison in the Island of Malta for his role in the Silk Letter Conspiracy, Hussain Ahmed volunteered to go with him so that he could look after him. He had personally not been convicted.
After his release, he returned to India and became actively involved in India's freedom struggle. He gave a call to the Indians in the British Army to come out of it and fight for independence, for which he was detained under the charges of treason.
In 1920 Hussain Ahmed played a key role in cementing the Congress-Khilafat Pact. He also declared that mutual friendship and harmony between the Hindus and Muslims should be strengthened to achieve the goal of defeating the British.
Hussain Ahmed Madani had influence over a section of the Muslims, more prominently those belonging to Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The separatist ideology of the All India Muslim League was opposed by Hussain Ahmed. He warned that the "two nation" theory of the Muslim League is dangerous to the common interests of the people.
He was against the two-nation theory, due to this, a large number of Muslims from Eastern U.P. and Bihar declined to migrate to Pakistan at the time of the Partition of India.
Husain Ahmad Madani quoted, "All should endeavor jointly for such a democratic government in which Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Parsis are included. Such a freedom is in accordance with Islam." "that Muslims could live as observant Muslims in a religiously plural society where they would be full citizens of an independent, secular India.
Death
Hussain Ahmed expressed his desire to take his last breath in India, on 5 December, 1957 he died.
Awards and Recognition
- He was one of the founder members of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He was the member of foundation committee headed by Sheikhul-Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan.
