Lal Bahadur Shastri

 

Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji, known as the Man of Peace. He was an Indian politician and freedom fighter and was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. Shastri Ji was the second Prime Minister of India from 1964 to 1966 and 6th Home Minister of India from 1961 to 1963. He is also remembered for composing the slogan of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan".

Lal Bahadur Shastri was graduated with a first-class degree from the Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1926 then he was given the title Shastri Scholar. In order to participate actively in the freedom movement, Lal Bahadur Shastri compromised even with his studies. From a very young age, Shastri Ji was inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. 


He wanted to work to uplift the weak and poor in society. He thus became a Life member of the Servants of the People Society also known as the Lok Sevak Mandal which was established by Lala Lajpat Rai.

Contribution in India's Independence


Lal Bahadur Shastri was drawn towards the national struggle for freedom when he was a boy. During the 1920s, Shastri Ji started to actively contribute to the independence struggle. He was an active participant in the non-cooperation movement. Because of this, the British police put him in jail.


In 1930, he participated in the Salt Satyagraha. For the involvement in this movement, the East India Company sentenced him to two years of imprisonment. Lal Bahadur Shastri was always believed that self-sustenance and self-reliance as the pillars to build a strong nation.


 In 1937, he joined the parliamentary Board of U.P as the Organising Secretary. After Mahatma Gandhi issued the Quit India Speech in 1942, many of the top leaders of the country, including Shastri Ji, were imprisoned.


Political Career of Shastri Ji


Shastri Ji was elected to the legislature of the United Provinces in 1937 and 1946. In 1947, after India got independence Shastri Ji appointed as the transport and minister for Home Affairs.


In 1951, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the All India Congress. In 1952, he was elected as the Rajya Sabha representative of UP. In 1955, he was appointed the Railway Minister. During his tenure, he made revolutionary changes in the Indian railway system. 


He played an important role in the successes of the Congress Party in the Indian General Elections of 1952, 1957 and 1962. He served as the Minister of Commerce and Industry in 1959 and Minister of Home Affairs in 1961.


After  Jawaharlal Nehru's death, Shastri Ji succeeded him as the Prime Minister Of India on 9th June, 1964 for a very short time from 1964 to 1966. . Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second prime minister of India. 


After the Chinese aggression of 1962, India faced another aggression from Pakistan in 1965 during Shastri Ji's tenure and Lal Bahadur Shastri showing his mettle and made it very clear that India would not sit and watch.


Shastri Ji died on 11 January 1966 while he was in Tashkent, Uzbekistan due to heart attack.

Shastri Ji was a great Indian patriot, a great freedom fighter, a man of the people and a remarkable Prime Minister.  He was, one of the great builders of modern India. Lal Bahadur Shastri had political associations is Indian National Congress. He had the political ideology such as nationalist, liberal, right-wing. He was always self-sustenance and self-reliance as the pillars to build a strong nation. 


His contribution to our agricultural development and the Green Revolution is well known. His brave leadership during the years of agrarian and military crisis has earned him a special place in our hearts. His slogan, "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" is heard even to this day in every corner of our country.
